Year of death: 27 January 1713 (21 February 1713) Year of birth: March 13, 1636 (April 18, 1636) A painter from the early Edo period. Commonly known as Ukon, he shaved his head and took the name Yoboku. Other names included Kokansai and Seihakusai. The son of Kano Naonobu, he was the second head of the Kobikicho Kano family. In addition to taking part in the production of screen paintings for Edo Castle and the Imperial Palace, he also produced paintings that were presented by the shogunate to the king of Korea and the king of Chuzan of the Ryukyu Kingdom. In 1704 (Hoei 1), he became a Hokan, and in 1706 he became a Hoin. His paintings generally follow the style of Tan'yū and lack strong individuality, but after Tan'yū's death he became a leading figure in the Kano family. His "Tsunenobu Shukozu", which are reduced-scale copies of old paintings that he has appraised, are also valuable in terms of art history. His representative works include the "Phoenix Screen" (Tokyo University of the Arts Collection) and the "Landscape Painting" sliding door painting at Gyokurin-in Temple, Daitokuji. <References> Tajima Shiichi (ed.), "A Complete View of Oriental Art", Vol. 5 (Keiko Nakamachi) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
