Mr. Toyoji Arima

Year of birth: Eiroku 12 (1569)
A feudal lord in the early Edo period, and lord of Kurume Domain in Chikugo Province (Fukuoka Prefecture). Born in Miki, Harima Province (Hyogo Prefecture) as the second son of Arima Noriyoshi. His mother was Ofuri, the daughter of Bessho Shimanokami Tadaharu. His childhood name was Mansuke. He was a Junior Fifth Rank Genba no Kami and Junior Fourth Rank Chamberlain. He first served Toyotomi Hideyoshi with a fief of 3,000 koku, which was later increased to 30,000 koku. After Hideyoshi's death, he served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and in 1600 (Keicho 5), he married Ieyasu's adopted daughter Murasakihime (daughter of Matsudaira Yasunao), and in the same year he joined the eastern army in the Battle of Sekigahara, receiving 60,000 koku of Fukuchiyama in Tanba Province. In 1620 (Genna 6), he was given an additional 20,000 koku of Arima in Settsu Province, his father's legacy, and in 1620 (Genna 6), he was transferred to Kurume in Chikugo Province with a fief of 210,000 koku. Although his life was filled with war, he was also famous as a tea master, and is one of the Seven Philosophers of Rikyu. <References> "Kurume City History" Volume 2

江戸初期の大名,筑後国久留米藩(福岡県)藩主。播磨国(兵庫県)三木に有馬則頼の次男として生まれる。母は別所志摩守忠治の娘お振。幼名万助。従五位下玄蕃頭,従四位下侍従。初め豊臣秀吉に仕え3000石,その後加増され3万石を領す。秀吉死後は徳川家康に仕え,慶長5(1600)年家康の養女連姫(松平康直の娘)を妻とし,同年関ケ原の戦では東軍に属し,丹波国福知山6万石を得る。同7年には父の遺領摂津国有馬2万石を加えられ,元和6(1620)年筑後国久留米21万石に移封された。戦乱にあけくれた生涯であったが,茶人としても有名で,利休七哲のひとりである。<参考文献>『久留米市史』2巻
