A country occupying the northern part of the North American continent. It is a constitutional monarchy based on a federal system and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Its capital is Ottawa. It has the second largest territory in the world after the Russian Federation, but its population is concentrated in the southern part. It is rich in both variety and quantity of resources, including nickel, zinc, asbestos, uranium, and lead. It is also active in the cultivation of wheat and other crops, and in livestock farming. It was developed as a colony by the United Kingdom and France, and became a dominion in 1867, and a sovereign state in 1931. Its population is 33.76 million (2010).
