Silkworm - Silkworm

Japanese: キヌガサソウ - きぬがさそう
Silkworm - Silkworm

A perennial plant of the lily family (APG classification: Liliaceae). The rhizome is thick, runs horizontally, and is 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter. The stem is thick, cylindrical, and erect, 30 to 60 cm tall, with 8 to 9 leaves in a whorl at the tip. The leaves are broadly oblanceolate or obovate-narrowly oblong, 20 to 30 cm long and 3 to 8 cm wide. In June and July, a short flower stalk grows from the center of the whorl of leaves, and a single white flower blooms with 7 to 9 oblong outer tepals and 7 to 8 thread-like inner tepals. There are 5 to 9 styles that are recurved outward. The berries are ovoid, ripen dark brown, and are sweet. They grow on the forest floor in the mountainous areas of central and northern Honshu. The name comes from the way the leaves are arranged, reminiscent of the kinugasa flower.
