A city in the central part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, about 5km north of the Yellow River, in the central part of the Hetao (Ordos) Plain. Population 1.24 million (1994). At the beginning of the 18th century, it was a village of several dozen houses, but in 1871 (the 10th year of the Tongzhi era), it was built as a city wall and developed into a town. In 1922, with the opening of the railway (Jingbao Line) to Beijing, it became a commercial city for leather and wool trade with Inner Mongolia and the Gansu region. Based on the iron ore of Baiyun Ebo, about 130km north, discovered after the liberation, and coking coal of Shikai in the east, a steel complex was built on the grassland in the west in 1957, and today, the town, which had a population of about 80,000 at the time of liberation, is transformed into an industrial city with industries such as various machinery, automobiles, electricity, textiles, leather, and sugar, centered on steel, which is known as the "Grassland Steel City."
