Suehiro Izutaro - Suehiro Izutaro

A scholar of civil law and labor law. Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Graduated from the German Law Department of Tokyo Imperial University in 1912 (Meiji 45). He became a professor at the same university in 1920 (Taisho 9), retired in 1946 (Showa 21), and became the first chairman of the Central Labor Relations Commission. In the field of civil law, he criticized the tendency toward German jurisprudence-based commentary-interpretation jurisprudence that had dominated academia until the mid-Taisho period, and advocated the study of law as it actually exists in social life. His book "Property Law" is said to be a groundbreaking achievement in this regard. He also advocated the need for case-based research from the perspective of the courts creating law in reality, and founded the Civil Law Case Study Group at Tokyo Imperial University. In the field of labor law, he advocated the need for labor law research, making him a pioneer in this field. He also made achievements in the sociology of law. His major works include "Specific Topics in Obligations" (1917), "Property Law" (1921), "Studies in Labor Law" (1926), "Introduction to Jurisprudence" (1938), and "Miscellaneous Civil Law Notes, Volumes 1 and 2" (1940, 1949).

民法学者、労働法学者。山口県出身。1912年（明治45）東京帝国大学独法科卒業。20年（大正9）同大学教授、46年（昭和21）退官し、中央労働委員会初代の会長となる。民法学の分野では、大正中期まで学界を支配していたドイツ法学的な注釈学的解釈法学の傾向を批判して、社会生活のなかに実際に存在する法の研究を唱導した。『物権法』はこの点からする画期的な業績であるといわれている。また、裁判所が現実に法を創造するという観点から判例研究を行う必要があることを説いて、東京帝国大学に民法判例研究会を創設した。労働法の分野では、労働法研究の必要性を説いてこの領域における開拓者的存在となった。そのほか、法社会学の業績もある。主著は『債権各論』（1917）、『物権法』（1921）、『労働法研究』（1926）、『法学入門』（1938）、『民法雑記帳　上下』（1940、1949）など。
