[Born] 1599. Nettono
[Died] July 21, 1661. Italian painter in Rome. Studied under F. Albani in Bologna. Influenced by Raphael and upholding the traditions of the Bolognese school. Returning to Rome in 1621, he was patronized by the Barberini family and produced his masterpiece, Wisdom (1629-33, Palazzo Barberini). He valued the classical tradition within Roman Baroque painting, and influenced classicism (→ Classical art) through his pupil Maratti.
