A microscope is a device that uses a variable-width beam of light emitted from a small slit to illuminate the cornea, iris, anterior chamber, lens, and vitreous body, and then magnifies and examines them under a microscope. It is an essential instrument for diagnosing the location of corneal opacity, the presence or absence of iritis, and the degree and location of cataracts. Additional devices include the Fluby lens (used for fundus examinations) and applanation tonometer. There are also specialized devices for measuring the thickness of the cornea and the depth of the anterior chamber.
