Hiawatha

Japanese: ハイアワサ（英語表記）Hiawatha

A legendary chief of the Onondaga tribe, a Native American tribe of North America. He is said to have united the five tribes of Onondaga, Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, and Seneca around 1570-1600 to form the Iroquois Confederacy, and taught them agriculture, navigation, medicine, and the arts. Based on academic sources, the poet Longfellow wrote a long narrative poem, Hiawatha (1855), which tells the life story of this legendary hero, using the meter of the Finnish epic poem Kalevala.

北アメリカ先住民族 (インディアン) のオノンダーガ族の伝説的な首長。 1570～1600年頃オノンダーガ，モホーク，オネイダ，カユーガ，セネカの5族を結集してイロコイ同盟をつくった人物とされ，農業，航海，医学，芸術を教えたといわれる。詩人ロングフェローは，学術資料を踏まえ，フィンランドの叙事詩『カレワラ』の韻律を用いて，この伝説的な英雄の生涯を歌った長編物語詩『ハイアワサ』 (1855) を著わした。
