A state (land) in western Germany. With a population of 17.82 million (1995), it is the largest state in Germany, with an area of 34,069 km2 and the highest population density, except for the city states of Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen. It was formed in 1946 when the northern part of the Rhineland and Westphalia, which were formerly Prussian territories, were merged into the former British occupied areas of Germany. Lippe and Detmold joined the following year. Since the Ruhr area was preserved without being divided, it was called "New German Prussia" at the time of its formation. It has a state constitution enacted in 1950, and its legislature is a state assembly with a four-year term. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
