A state (land) in western Germany. With a population of 17.82 million (1995), it is the largest state in Germany, with an area of 34,069 km2 and the highest population density, except for the city states of Berlin, Hamburg, and Bremen. It was formed in 1946 when the northern part of the Rhineland and Westphalia, which were formerly Prussian territories, were merged into the former British occupied areas of Germany. Lippe and Detmold joined the following year. Since the Ruhr area was preserved without being divided, it was called "New German Prussia" at the time of its formation. It has a state constitution enacted in 1950, and its legislature is a state assembly with a four-year term.

ドイツ西部の州(ラント)。人口1782万人(1995)は最大，面積3万4069km2で，ベルリン，ハンブルク，ブレーメンの都市州を除けば人口密度も最大である。旧ドイツのイギリス占領地区のうち，旧プロイセン領のラインラント北部とウェストファーレンが合併して1946年に成立した。翌年リッペ･デトモルトが加入した。ルール地域が分割されずに温存されたため，成立時には〈新ドイツのプロイセン〉と呼ばれた。1950年に制定された州憲法を持ち，立法府は任期4年の州議会である。
