Taro (Colocasia antiquorum var. esculenta) - Taro (English spelling)
A perennial plant of the Araceae family, native to tropical Asia. It is an important crop cultivated widely from the tropics to temperate regions. Numerous leaves grow from a short, thick underground rhizome, with thick, porous, soft petioles that overlap at the base. The leaf blades are heart-shaped and oval, and secrete wax onto the surface to repel water. Around October, it occasionally produces spadixes wrapped in yellow-green spathes. As it grows, it produces many baby tubers on the sides of the parent tuber. The tubers contain starch and carbohydrates. There are many cultivated varieties, and the group known as taro in tropical Asia is also a variety of this species.
