A movement for self-reform and reform unique to the Catholic Church that existed before the Reformation of Luther and Calvin. After the appearance of Luther, the Catholic Reformation took the form of a Counter-Reformation as a reaction against Luther, but the Catholic Reformation is not the same as the Counter-Reformation. In the past, both Catholic and Protestant historians explained the period of the Reformation or Church Reformation with only two concepts: the Reformation of Luther and Calvin and the Counter-Reformation (for example, the Council of Trent) that arose in opposition to it, and when they used the concept of the Catholic Reformation, it was used as a synonym for the Counter-Reformation.

ルターやカルバンの宗教改革以前から存在していた，カトリック教会独自の自己改革，革新運動。カトリック改革は，ルターの出現以後，ルターに反対する反動としての反(対抗)宗教改革Counter‐Reformationという形をとったが，カトリック改革すなわち反宗教改革ではない。かつてはカトリック史家もプロテスタント史家も宗教改革ないし教会改革の時代を，ルターやカルバンの〈宗教改革〉とそれに対抗して起こった〈反(対抗)宗教改革〉(たとえばトリエント公会議)という二つの概念だけで説明し，カトリック改革という概念を用いても，それは反宗教改革と同義語として用いられてきた。
