A general term for the genus Nemophila in the family Periclinaceae. Eighteen species are distributed in North America. All are annual plants that spread by creeping. The leaves are soft, pinnately lobed, and alternate or opposite. The bell-shaped flowers with five lobes grow in the axillae. Nemophila menziesii (→ Persian blue), commonly cultivated in flower beds and pots, produces clear sky-blue flowers of the same quality as the naturalized plant Veronica persica. The flower diameter is 1.5 to 2 cm. The flowers of this variety, var. discoidalis , are purple-brown with a white margin, and the flower diameter is one size smaller than that of the parent species. Another variety cultivated is Nemophila maculata , which has dark purple spots like ink spots on the tips of its white petals. Seeds are sown in the fall and grown in a sunny, well-drained environment. Fertile soil with a high humus content is suitable.
