A general term for the African Nemesia genus in the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Scrophulariaceae). Native to South Africa, they are annual or perennial plants, but all horticultural species are treated as autumn-sown annuals. The most commonly cultivated of these is N. strumosa Benth., the Sutney variety which was developed in England. It grows to a height of 20-40cm. The basal leaves are spatula-shaped, and the stem leaves are lanceolate. The flowers are irregular with five petals, 2-3cm across, and look very similar to the Miltonia orchid. There are a wide variety of flower colors, including crimson, orange-red, yellow, orange, and white, as well as the Blue Nemesia, a small-flowered blue variety developed by crossbreeding with other species. Since it is not cold-tolerant, it can be grown in a greenhouse pot and enjoyed as is, or it can be planted in a flower bed in spring.
