Saccharose is also called sucrose. It is a disaccharide consisting of one glucose molecule and one fructose molecule, synthesized by many plants such as sugar cane and sugar beet. Industrial products that are mainly made of sucrose are collectively called sugar. The words sucrose and sugar are often used interchangeably, but when dealing with the chemical substance, the name sucrose is always used. Sucrose is found in all plants capable of photosynthesis, and has a very ancient history of use by humans as a sweetener. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
