Numazu shell mounds

Japanese: 沼津貝塚 - ぬまづかいづか
Numazu shell mounds
<br /> A shell mound site from the Jomon to Yayoi periods in Numazu, Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. It is located on a hill on the east bank of the Mano River, a tributary of the Kitakami River, and extends over an area of 220m east to west and 160m north to south. Excavated by Mori Soshichiro and Endo Genshichi from 1908 (Meiji 41) to 1929 (Showa 4), it is known for the large number of bone and horn implements from the end of the middle to final Jomon period that were unearthed. It became a nationally designated historic site in 1972 (Showa 47), and was further designated in 2000 (Heisei 12). Fishing equipment such as bone and horn fish hooks and harpoons , accessories such as combs and pendants, and Jomon pottery are designated as important cultural properties. The shell mound is divided into areas where marine products are the main source of livestock, and areas where freshwater shellfish are the main source of livestock, which shows that people lived there for such a long period of time that the elevation of the sea level changed significantly. It is about a 20-minute drive from JR Ishinomaki Station on the Senseki Line.
