Nukus - Nukus (English spelling) Нукус/Nukus

It is the capital of the Karakalpakstan Autonomous Republic, which is part of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Central Asia. It is located on the right bank of the alluvial lowland where the Amu Darya flows into the Aral Sea. It has a population of 199,000 (1999), 314,928 (2019 estimate). It was founded in the 1860s as a mountain village of the Turkic people of Central Asia, became a city in 1932, and has been the capital of the autonomous republic since 1939. There is a railway line that runs through Bukhara and Samarkand to Tashkent, and a motorway has also been developed. It accounts for 15% of the industrial production of the autonomous republic, and the metallurgical industry in particular is noteworthy. Other industries include oils and fats, furniture, sewing, and food. It is also a cultural and academic center, with a university and a branch of the Academy of Sciences.

中央アジアのウズベキスタン共和国を構成するカラカルパクスタン自治共和国の首都。アムダリヤがアラル海に注ぐ沖積低地の右岸に位置する。人口19万9000（1999）、31万4928（2019推計）。1860年代に中央アジアのトルコ族の山村として誕生、1932年に市となり、1939年より同自治共和国の首都。ブハラ、サマルカンドを経てタシケントに通じる鉄道が通り、自動車道も整備されている。自治共和国の工業生産高の15％を占め、とくに冶金(やきん)工業が注目される。ほかに油脂、家具、縫製、食品工業も盛ん。大学、科学アカデミー支部があり、文化、学術の中心地でもある。
