It is the capital of the Karakalpakstan Autonomous Republic, which is part of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Central Asia. It is located on the right bank of the alluvial lowland where the Amu Darya flows into the Aral Sea. It has a population of 199,000 (1999), 314,928 (2019 estimate). It was founded in the 1860s as a mountain village of the Turkic people of Central Asia, became a city in 1932, and has been the capital of the autonomous republic since 1939. There is a railway line that runs through Bukhara and Samarkand to Tashkent, and a motorway has also been developed. It accounts for 15% of the industrial production of the autonomous republic, and the metallurgical industry in particular is noteworthy. Other industries include oils and fats, furniture, sewing, and food. It is also a cultural and academic center, with a university and a branch of the Academy of Sciences.
