Abbreviation Mon. A constellation that spreads across the equator, east of Orion and north of Canis Major. It has a large area but few bright stars. It faces the Milky Way, so there are many nebulae and star clusters. This constellation was newly established around the 16th century, and is said to have been named by J. Hevelius or J. Bartschius. A unicorn is a fictional animal with a horse-like body and a single long horn on its forehead. Alpha unicorn is located at the southeastern edge of the constellation, and is faint with an apparent magnitude of 4.1 and a spectral type of K0.

略号Mon.。赤道上に広がる星座で，オリオン座の東，おおいぬ座の北にある。面積は広いが輝星は少ない。天の川に面しているので星雲，星団が多い。この星座は16世紀ごろに新設されたもので，命名者はJ.ヘベリウス，あるいはバルチウスJ.Bartschiusといわれている。一角獣は架空の動物で体軀（たいく）は馬に似て額に細長い1本の角をもっている。α星はこの星座の南東の端にあり，実視等級4.1等，スペクトル型K0で暗い。
