A state in the northeastern United States. Abbreviated as NH. There are many mountains eroded by ice, including the White Mountains in the north, and little flat land. Numerous glacial lakes are distributed in the hills. It is close to a large city, and the main agricultural products are dairy farming, vegetable and fruit cultivation. Abundant water power forms the basis of industry, and industries such as textiles, leather (shoes), and precision machinery are thriving. Settled by the British in 1623. One of the 13 independent states, it joined the Union in 1788. It is now known as the state where the first presidential primary election is held. State capital: Concord. Largest city: Manchester.
