A type of acrobatics. Performers ride on large balls. In Chinese sangaku, there was a form of ball riding called "Tokyuugi." In Japan, it was first performed in 1864 by a foreign circus troupe in Yokohama. The first Japanese performers were Yamamoto Kojima Tayu II, an acrobat who had returned from the West, who performed in Sennichimae, Osaka in 1883. The following year, Egawa Sakuzo (portrait) from Tokyo invited him to Yokohama and performed, gaining popularity with his bottle-walking, ring-breaking, and springboard tricks. Later, the performance moved to Asakusa Park, where boys and girls around the age of 10 performed on balls as Hashibenkei, Kurama Tengu, and Dojoji, and became known as "Egawa's Ball Riding." Since the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, there have been no troupes that specialize in ball riding. Today, it can be seen in circus troupes, and ball riding by sea lions and monkeys has also been devised.
