Heike Mokkanryo (confiscation of government land by the Heike clan)

Japanese:
Heike Mokkanryo (confiscation of government land by the Heike clan)

It is also read as "Heikebokkanryo." At the beginning of the Kamakura period, the estates and positions of the Taira clan were confiscated by the Imperial Court when the Taira clan was destroyed. The Tale of the Heike records that the Taira clan had over 500 manors and estates across the country, but most of these were positions such as head family positions, lord positions, and custodial positions. When the Taira clan fell, they were confiscated by the Imperial Court. At first, the Imperial Court gave some of them to Minamoto (Kiso) Yoshinaka and Minamoto Yukiie, but when they also fell, the Imperial Court awarded the majority of them to Minamoto no Yoritomo as a reward for his achievements in pursuing the Taira clan. The territory was the core of what was called the Kanto Goryo (Goryo) over which the Kamakura Shogunate had strong control, and became the Shogunate's most important economic base. However, among the Taira clan's confiscated lands, there were some that did not belong to the Shogunate, including the territory of Taira Yorimori (Kiyomori's half-brother, his mother being Ikeno Zenni).
