A city located in the northern part of Yamagata Prefecture, occupying the Shinjo Basin and the surrounding mountainous areas. It was incorporated as a city in 1949. The city, located in the center of the basin, developed on the alluvial fan of the Sasunagawa River, a tributary of the Mogami River, and was the castle town of the Tozawa clan during the Edo period. The Ou Main Line (Yamagata Shinkansen) runs through the city, and the Rikuu East Line and Rikuu West Line branch off from it. Rice is the main agricultural production area, but furniture and electrical equipment factories have been established in the 1960s, and industrial parks have been developed since the 1980s. There is a lot of snowfall, and the Snowy Region Branch of the Agricultural Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is located there, and is working to overcome and utilize the snow. The ruins of Shinjo Castle are now Mogami Park, and there are Tozawa Shrine and Tenmangu Shrine. Shinjo Onsen (alkaline saline spring, 39°C) is located at the southwestern end. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 222.85 ^km2 . 38,850 people (2010).

山形県北部，新庄盆地と周辺山地を占める市。1949年市制。盆地の中心の市街は最上川の支流指首野(さすの)川の扇状地に発達，江戸時代戸沢氏の城下町であった。奥羽本線（山形新幹線）が通じ，陸羽東線，陸羽西線が分岐する。米作中心の農業を営むが，1960年代から家具や電気機器の工場が立地，1980年代からは工業団地の造成が進んだ。積雪が多く，農水省農業総合研究所積雪地方支所があって，克雪，利雪に取り組んでいる。新庄城跡は最上公園となり，戸沢神社，天満宮などがある。南西端に新庄温泉（アルカリ性食塩泉，39℃）がある。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。222.85km²。３万8850人（2010）。
