Japanese: 内田吐夢 - うちだとむ

Film director. His real name was Tsunejiro. He was born on April 26, 1898 in Okayama City. After dropping out of Okayama Middle School, he worked in Yokohama. In 1920 (Taisho 9), while visiting the Taisho Katsuei film studios that had been established there, he appeared in "Amateur Club" and entered the film industry. In 1926, he joined Nikkatsu as an actor, and made the transition to directing with "Three Days of the Race" (1927). In 1929 (Showa 4), he released "Living Doll," which was praised as a pioneer of trend films for its satirical depiction of the sorrows of ordinary people at the mercy of the social system. "The Revenge Player" (1931) also had the same theme. In the late 1930s, he made heavy, realist talkie works such as "Theater of Life" (1936), "The Naked Town," "Endless Advance" (1937), and "Earth" (1939). He went to China in 1945 (Showa 20) and remained there until 1954. He returned with "Bloody Spear Fuji" (1955) and established a world in Japanese cinema by focusing on the violent energy of Japanese men in relation to social class in films such as the "Daibosatsu Toge" trilogy (1957-1959), the "Miyamoto Musashi" pentalogy (1961-1965), and "Hunger Straits" (1964). He passed away on August 7, 1970. His books include "Fifty Years of the Film Director" (1968).

映画監督。本名常次郎。明治31年4月26日岡山市に生まれる。岡山中学中退後、横浜で働く。1920年（大正9）、同地に設立された大正活映の撮影所へ遊びに行くうち、『アマチュア倶楽部(くらぶ)』に出演、映画界に入る。1926年に俳優として日活に入社、『競走三日間』（1927）で監督へ転進した。1929年（昭和4）『生ける人形』を発表、社会機構に踊らされる小市民の悲哀を風刺的に描いて傾向映画の先駆と評価された。『仇討(あだうち)選手』（1931）も同じ主題の作品。1930年代後半には『人生劇場』（1936）、『裸の町』『限りなき前進』（1937）、『土』（1939）とトーキーによる重厚なリアリズム作品をつくる。1945年（昭和20）中国に渡り、1954年まで残留。『血槍(ちやり)富士』（1955）で復帰して、『大菩薩峠(だいぼさつとうげ)』三部作（1957～1959）、『宮本武蔵(むさし)』五部作（1961～1965）、『飢餓(きが)海峡』（1964）などで日本の男の暴力エネルギーを社会階級との関係で凝視、日本映画に一つの世界を確立した。昭和45年8月7日死去。著書に『映画監督五十年』（1968）がある。
