Kawamutsu - Kawamutsu

Japanese:
Kawamutsu - Kawamutsu

A freshwater fish belonging to the order Cypriniformes and family Cyprinidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is also called Mutsu, Moto, Hae, Haya, etc. It is found in the Noto Peninsula and Honshu west of the Tenryu River, Shikoku, and Kyushu. In recent years, it has been breeding in some rivers in the Izu Peninsula and Kanto region. It is also found in the Korean Peninsula, China, and Taiwan. Few individuals exceed 20 cm in length. It has no baleen and its lateral line curves downward. It resembles the same genus, the Japanese dace, but has clearly different color spots on its sides. Its ecology is also quite different, with this species often found in the shade of reeds and willows or in pools, where it waits to eat insects that fall on the water surface or flow downstream. It once lived in streams in plain areas, but was defeated when the Japanese dace was introduced and reproduced, and is now often restricted to mountainous areas. In addition, recent river improvements have caused reeds and willows to disappear from the riverbanks in the plains, further accelerating this trend. They spawn around pools and on the gravel bottoms of flat streams from May to August. During this time, males have a reddish belly, so they are called akamutsu or akamoto. As for food, they taste a little less good than oikawa.
