Guinea Mina Commercial Board

…the central body that controlled Portugal's overseas trade from the 16th century onwards. It originated as a trading organisation established in conjunction with Portugal's advance along the coast of West Africa in the 15th century, and was originally called the Consejo de Guinea-Mina. However, when Vasco da Gama opened the trade in spices from the East, the name Consejo de Indo-Mina and simply Consejo de Indo appeared in 1503. The king had already monopolised the trade in gold from Africa, but in 1506 he also monopolised the trade in spices from the East, and all trade with overseas territories was conducted through the Consejo de Indo in Lisbon. …
