Yoshio Tanaka

A naturalist and agricultural bureaucrat during the late Edo and Meiji periods. His childhood name was Hosuke. He was the third son of Tanaka Josui, a doctor from Iida (Iida City), Shinano Province, and Tsumako. He studied medicine and natural history under Ito Keisuke. In 1862, he was assigned to the Bureau of Industrial Studies at the Bansho Shirabesho, and in 1867, he participated in the World's Fair in Paris, ordered by the shogunate, bringing with him over 50 boxes of insect specimens that he had made himself. In 1868, he became an official clerk at the Kaiseisho, and was involved in the establishment of the Chemical and Biological Sciences Bureau. At this time, he proposed turning the Chemical and Biological Sciences Bureau into a museum, but this was not realized. Instead, he worked hard to establish a museum and a zoo in Ueno. He served as an examiner for the National Industrial Exposition, and as an administrative officer for world's fairs in Austria, America, and other countries, and devoted himself to promoting industry. In 1881, he became Director of the Agriculture Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and also worked in the Museum Bureau. He contributed to the establishment of the Greater Japan Agricultural Association, the Forestry Association, and the Fisheries Association. 幕末明治期の博物学者,農務官僚。幼名芳介。信濃国飯田(飯田市)の医者田中如水,津真子の3男。伊藤圭介に入門,医学,博物学を学ぶ。文久2(1862)年蕃書調所物産学出役,慶応3(1867)年パリの万国博覧会に幕命により自ら作成した昆虫標本50箱余を携えて参加。明治1(1868)年開成所御用掛,舎密局設立に当たる。このとき舎密局を博物館とすることを建議するも実現せず,上野の博物館,動物園設立に尽力。内国勧業博覧会審査官,オーストリア,アメリカなど万国博覧会事務官を歴任,殖産興業に力を尽くす。14年農商務省農務局長,博物局兼勤。大日本農会,山林会,水産会の創設に貢献。東京学士会院会員,貴族院議員,男爵。<著作>『垤甘度爾列氏植物自然分科表』『泰西訓蒙図解』『動物学初篇哺乳類』『動物訓蒙初篇哺乳類』『有用植物図説』<参考文献>みやじましげる『田中芳男伝』
