Saarbrücken (English spelling)

Japanese: ザールブリュッケン(英語表記)Saarbrücken
Saarbrücken (English spelling)
The capital of the state of Saarland in western Germany. It is the industrial center of the Saar coalfields. A castle has been built at the crossing point of the Saar since Roman times, and in the Middle Ages it flourished as a key location on the trade route connecting the Rhine with northern France and Flanders. It was granted city rights in 1321. Mining and manufacturing developed from the mid-19th century, and in 1909 it merged with three neighboring cities to form its current area. It is currently the political, economic, and cultural center of the state, with industries centered on iron and steel, as well as brewing, food, printing, machinery, optical equipment, and clothing. It is also home to the University of the Saar (1948) and the State Museum. Historical buildings include the Old Town Hall (1750), the baroque Ludwig Cathedral (1762-1775), the Old Bridge over the Saar (1546), and an 18th-century castle. Population: 175,810 (2010).
