Nanen - Nanen

Japanese: 南苑 - なんえん

A facility related to Heijo Palace. It was first mentioned in the Shoku Nihongi in 727 (Jinki 4) and appears in the same book up to 747 (Tenpyo 19). It was used for lectures on the Niō-gyō Sutra, archery on horseback, investiture ceremonies, banquets, etc. There is no definite proof as to which part of Heijo Palace was the Southern Garden, but Sekino Tei estimates it to have been on the central axis of Heijo Palace, south of the original Daigokuden. It would have needed to be a fairly large space for horseback archery and other activities, and an article in the Shoku Nihongi from 727 says that two trees in the Southern Garden were blown down by winds from Tatenami Pond, so it is known that trees were also planted in the garden.

平城宮に関連する施設。《続日本紀》での初見は727年(神亀4)で，以後同書に747年(天平19)までみえる。仁王経の講説，騎射，叙位，宴などに使われた。平城宮内のどこが南苑にあたるかは確証はないが，関野貞は平城宮中軸線上で，初期の大極殿の南方に推定している。騎射などからみてかなり広い場所であることが必要であり，また727年の《続日本紀》の記事によると楯波池からおこった風によって南苑の樹2株が吹きおれたとあるから，同苑には樹木も植えられていたことが知られる。
