Nabata ruins
<br /> The remains of a settlement in Nabatake, Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. It is located at the tip of a gentle hill facing a plain at an altitude of about 10m. It is the remains of a settlement with rice cultivation ruins believed to be the oldest in Japan, consisting of 16 layers, and the remains of a rice paddy were confirmed in the 12th layer, which is from the latter half of the Late Jomon period. The remains of a rice paddy dating back to the middle of the Yayoi period were also found in the upper layers. The remains of the rice paddy are four small rice paddies measuring just over 18m2 , and it is believed that rice was cultivated by direct seeding at the time. A wide variety of artifacts were excavated, including wooden hoes, stone knives, stone axes , and pottery. The pottery remains are Yamanodera-type pottery, which is slightly older than the Yuusu -type pottery from the Itazuke site (Fukuoka Prefecture), which was previously considered the oldest. About 250 grains of carbonized rice were also excavated, and more than 100 of them were found to be Japonica. Excavations have uncovered waterways, dams, drainage outlets, and ridge dividers made of wooden stakes and sheet piles, proving that large-scale rice paddies were operated in the early Yayoi period. This is believed to be evidence that rice farming by paddy field cultivation was first practiced in Japan during the late Jomon period, and was designated a national historic site in 1983 ( Showa 58). Currently, the Matsurakan Museum, named after Matsurakoku, which appears in the Gishiwajinden, has been built, and displays carbonized rice excavated from the ruins, as well as agricultural tools such as stone knives, hoes, and sickles, and other materials related to the excavation. Pit dwellings and rice paddy remains have also been restored. It is about a 5-minute drive from Karatsu Station on the JR Karatsu Line and other lines.
