…It is a compound word of the Greek words anthropos (man) and sophia (wisdom). It has been used since the 16th century as a term to describe the esoteric position underlying the history of European thought (see Eugenius Philalethes's Anthroposophia Theomagica, 1650). In the 19th century, anthropologist Ignaz Paul Vital Troxler (1780-1866) and Herbartian philosopher Robert von Zimmermann (1824-98) began to use it as a general academic term.
