A town located in the east of the Peloponnese Peninsula, Greece. Population 11,000 (1981). In modern Greek it is called Návplion. A seaport facing the Gulf of Argos, it was the shipping port for vegetables and fruits from the Argos plain. It has been a port since Mycenaean times, and in the Middle Ages it was used as a stopover for Venetian trade. A 15th century fort remains on Bourtzi Island, 500 meters offshore, and behind the town is the 18th century Fortress of Palamidi, which makes for a beautiful landscape. From 1822, just after modern Greek independence, the town was the capital of Greece for over 10 years. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
