A former town in Kikuchi County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. It occupies part of the plateau between the Koshi River and the Shirakawa River. In addition to rice cultivation, the town also produces watermelons and melons. Leaf tobacco cultivation and dairy farming are particularly popular. There are also starch and cement factories. In February 2006, the town merged with Nishigoshi Town in Kikuchi County to become a city, Koshi City. Area: 28.89 km2 . Population: 22,411 (2003). 熊本県北部,菊池郡の旧町。合志川と白川にはさまれた台地の一部を占める。米作を行うほかスイカ,メロンも産し,特に葉タバコ栽培と酪農が盛ん。デンプン,セメントの工場もある。2006年2月,菊池郡西合志町と合併し市制,合志市となる。28.89km2。2万2411人(2003)。
