The tribal law of the Germanic tribe of Lombards. It is the only Germanic tribal code that has been subjected to academic study. For example, the Edictum Rotharii is more complete in content and structure than any other Germanic tribal code. Although Lombard law was strongly influenced by Roman law due to the nature of the territory it ruled, it maintained its own legal customs until the end and was not assimilated into Roman law. Even after the Frankish Empire conquered Lombardy in 774, Lombard law survived, and by the 11th century, the interpretation of Lombard law in the courts showed rapid development and took on the nature of systematic and theoretical research. Schools that explained Lombard law and Frankish-Lombard law were born, such as the Pavia School of Law.
