A satirical futuristic novel by British novelist G. Orwell, published in 1949. His previous work, Animal Farm, was a scathing critique of Stalin's dictatorship in the form of an animal fable, but 1984 explores this theme even more thoroughly, depicting the world of 1984, in which the three superpowers of Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia are in conflict. In Oceania, ruled by a dictator called the "Great Brothers," the "Ministry of Peace" wages war, the "Ministry of Love" exercises ideological control, and the "Ministry of Plenty" brings poverty. All information and history are falsified, erased, and fabricated by the "Ministry of Truth" at the dictator's whim, the actions of the people are constantly projected on telescreens, and thoughts are confined to the framework of "Newspeak," a new language created for the convenience of those in power to control their thoughts, and are manipulated at the whim of the government. Here, the author expresses a sense of despair about the terrifying future of totalitarianism through the fate of the protagonist, Winston Smith, a low-ranking bureaucrat working in the Ministry of Truth.
