Quilt Sperma (English name) Swamp Taro

Japanese: キルトスペルマ（英語表記）swamp taro

A plant of the Araceae family (illustration) cultivated in wetlands from East Malaysia to the islands of the South Pacific. It is a relative of the so-called taro plant. There are about 10 species. It is a large plant with an enlarged underground rhizome, with leaf stalks that can sometimes reach a height of more than 3 m, and the leaf blades are spear-shaped. Many of the leaf stalks have thorns. The flowers are monoecious, with 4-6 tepals and 4-6 stamens, and are densely packed in a thick, club-shaped spadix. The spathe that surrounds this inflorescence is oblong, boat-shaped, and usually purple-brown.

東マレーシアから南太平洋の島々で，湿地に栽培されるサトイモ科の植物（イラスト）。いわゆるタロイモの仲間。約10種ほどある。　地下に肥大した根茎を有する大型の植物で，時には高さ3m以上になる葉柄を有し，葉身は矛形になる。葉柄にはとげがあるものが多い。花は雌雄同花で，4～6枚の花被片と4～6本のおしべを有していて，太い棍棒状の肉穂花序に密集してつく。この花序をつつむ仏炎包は長楕円形ボート形で，通常紫茶色を帯びる。
