Sand dune agriculture

The cultivation of vegetables and flowers on sand dunes, such as those on the coast. Sand dunes are not suitable for paddy fields, and as farmland, production is unstable due to drought and lack of soil fertility, and development has been delayed due to the strong damage caused by sand. However, from the 1950s onwards, with the introduction of sand-breaking forests, windbreaks, sprinklers and farming machinery, the high soil temperature, good drainage and ease of deep cultivation have allowed the cultivation of Chinese yams, asparagus, scallions, watermelons, tomatoes and flower bulbs.

海岸などの砂丘地を利用して野菜や花卉(かき)などの栽培を営むこと。砂丘地は水田には適さず，畑地としても干害と地力不足のため生産が不安定である上に，砂の害が強いため開発が遅れていた。しかし昭和30年代から，防砂林，防風林，スプリンクラー，耕作機械の導入などにより，地温が高く排水が良好で深耕しやすいなどの利点をいかして，ナガイモ，アスパラガス，ラッキョウ，スイカ，トマト，花卉球根類などが栽培されるようになった。
