Toyomatsu [village] - Toyomatsu
A town in Jinseki District, on the eastern edge of Hiroshima Prefecture. Population 1959 (1995). It is located on the Kibi Plateau, and the Nariwa River, a tributary of the Takahashi River, flows east along the northern border. The central settlement, Shimo Toyomatsu, has flourished since ancient times as a temple town for the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine, and it is said that a market was established here in the Middle Ages. Agriculture, mainly rice, is the main industry, and on the plateau tobacco and konjac are cultivated, as well as Japanese beef cattle. The Domen Cave Ruins are part of the Taishakukyo Ruins, and Jomon period artifacts have been excavated there. The Shin-Nariwa River Dam is located on the Nariwa River, and is used for power generation and industrial water.

広島県東端,神石郡の町。人口1959(1995)。吉備高原にあり,高梁(たかはし)川支流の成羽(なりわ)川が北境を東流する。中心集落の下豊松は鶴岡八幡神社の門前町として古くから栄え,中世には市が開かれていたといわれる。米作を中心とした農業が主産業で,高原ではタバコ,コンニャクの栽培や,和牛の飼育が行われる。堂面洞窟遺跡は帝釈峡遺跡群の一部で,縄文時代の遺物が出土した。成羽川に発電・工業用水用の新成羽川ダムがある。
