Power conversion

Japanese: 電力変換 - でんりょくへんかん

This refers to the conversion of one or more of the variables that characterize the form of power transmitted for use in an electrical system, such as voltage, current, frequency (including direct current as zero frequency), phase, and number of phases, into a different form without substantial energy loss. In the past, power conversion was performed using electric machines such as rotary current converters, but now static power conversion is performed using electronic means such as thyristors and diodes. A device that performs static power conversion is called a static power conversion device.

電気システムの中で電気エネルギーの利用のために伝送される電力について，その形態を特徴づける変数である電圧，電流，周波数(零周波数としての直流も含む)，位相，相数などの量の一つ以上を実質的なエネルギー損失を伴うことなく別の形態に変えることをいう。かつては回転変流機など電気機械による電力変換も行われたが，現在はサイリスターやダイオードなどの電子的な手段を用いた静止電力変換によっている。静止電力変換を行う装置を静止電力変換装置という。
