Also called "kibashi." A bridge whose girders are mainly made of wood. Wooden bridges have a long history, dating back to the primitive log bridges. In Japan in particular, most bridges before the Meiji period were wooden girder bridges, and even today they are used for simple bridges and temporary bridges in rural areas. However, they are no longer used for modern bridges because they are inferior to steel and concrete in terms of material uniformity, reliability, durability, and strength. However, in countries such as Switzerland, new wooden bridges are still sometimes built to blend in with the natural environment, and in North America, there are movements to preserve historic old wooden bridges as cultural assets.
