Torbay
A unitary authority in the southwest of England. Its administrative seat is Torquay, about 45km east of Plymouth. It was formed in 1968 by the merger of Torquay, Paynton and Brixham. In 1998 it separated from the county of Devon to become a unitary authority. It is a warm-climate seaside resort facing the English Channel, with Mediterranean shrubs and palm trees thriving, and is known as a venue for various conferences. The Premonstratensian monastery, founded in 1196, is used as an art museum. It is where William of Orange (William III), Prince of Orange, first landed on November 5, 1688, at the request of the UK. Area: 63km2 . Population: 132,800 (2005 estimate).
