…At that time, the Christian church considered lepers to be people who should be socially rejected, because the Old Testament, Leviticus 13-14, already had a law that declared lepers to be “unclean” and banished them from society. In medieval European cities, people with leprosy were reported to the authorities, and after a strict examination, if they were diagnosed as lepers, they were stripped of their citizenship and sent to a leprosarium outside the city, a special asylum for lepers. This place was called lazaretto (a word derived from the beggar Lazarus, who was covered in boils all over his body, in Luke 16:19-31).…
