...The spirits of foxes, which are typical of animal spirits, are known to possess people. On the other hand, in the case of fox gods, foxes are feared for their predictive abilities, and are often enshrined in shrines as Inari gods. Although fox spirits are most strongly expressed at the stage of possession, they are not considered to be kami.
