Aginashi - Aginashi

A perennial plant of the Albataceae family (APG classification: Albataceae) endemic to Japan. It grows naturally by emerging from marshes in wilderness areas. It overwinters as seeds or bulbils. Its appearance is similar to that of Arrowhead, but it does not produce stolon branches, the tips of the lateral segments of the leaf blade are blunt, and it can be distinguished by the numerous egg-shaped bulbils it produces inside the base of the petiole in autumn. Adult leaves are arrowhead-shaped and juvenile leaves are oblong. It is called chinless because its juvenile leaves are simple and do not produce lateral segments.

オモダカ科（APG分類：オモダカ科）の多年草で日本特産種。原野の沼沢地に抽水して自生。種子またはむかごで越冬する。外形はオモダカに似るが走出枝をつくらず、葉身の側片の先端が鈍頭で、秋ごろ葉柄基部の内側に卵状のむかごを多数つくるので区別できる。成葉は矢じり形で幼葉は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形。幼葉が単純で側片ができないことから顎無(あごな)しという。
