...In Khabarovsk, the heads of the Kwantung Army were tried for war crimes for their responsibility in preparing Unit 731 for biological warfare. The Soviet representative, Lieutenant General Kuz'ma Nikolaevich Derevyanko (1903-1955), participated in the Japan Council and often criticized MacArthur's headquarters, influencing Japan to strengthen its democratization and demilitarization. In 1950, the Cominform criticized the revived Japanese Communist Party and urged it to become more radical, but this only led to further oppression by the occupying forces.
