A village in Yatsushiro County, central Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 2,921 (1995). The southwestern part borders Yatsushiro City. The eastern and southern parts are largely mountainous, part of the Kyushu Mountain Range, while the northwestern part is a lowland that continues onto the Yatsushiro Plain. The Kawamata River flows northwest through the center and joins the Hikawa River, which flows west in the northwestern part. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and in addition to rice and wheat, mandarin oranges, tea, and bamboo shoots are cultivated at the foot of the mountains. It is also known as a ginger producing area. It was the birthplace of the Taneyama stonemasons who built many spectacles bridges throughout the country from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji period, and Hashimoto Kangoro built the old Nijubashi Bridge at the Imperial Palace. 熊本県中部,八代郡の村。人口2921(1995)。南西部は八代市に接する。東・南部は九州山地に属する山地が広く占め,北西部には八代平野に続く低地が開ける。河俣川が中央部を北西流し,北西部を西流する氷川に合流する。農林業が主体で,米,麦のほか山麓でのミカン,茶,タケノコなどの栽培が盛ん。ショウガの産地としても知られる。江戸末期から明治にかけて全国各地に多くの眼鏡橋をかけた種山石工の出身地で,橋本勘五郎は皇居の旧二重橋を造っている。
