This was followed by Kaibara Ekiken's Kafu (Flower Collection) (1698) and Ito Sannojo (Ihei)'s Kadan Chikinsho (Flower Bed and Garden) (1695), and over 70 gardening books were written throughout the Edo period. Beginning with Anrakuan Sakuden's Hyakutsubakishu (Collection of One Hundred Camellias) (1630), specialized books on flowers such as azaleas, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, peonies, plums, morning glories, irises, and dianthus were published, and many varieties were created for their leaves, such as maples, tricolor apples, celery, pine orchids, and Dendrobiums. …

…Although double-flowered cherry trees, which had been cultivated since the Nara period, were known, it was only in the Edo period that cherry tree varieties were recorded in a comprehensive manner, with 40 varieties listed in Mizuno Motokatsu's Kadan Komoku (1681). Since then, many illustrated books of cherry trees have been published, including Matsuoka Gentatsu's Igansai Ohin (1758) which lists 69 varieties, and five volumes (1803-04) of Kafu, Zoku Kafu Vol. 1 and 2, Mata Zoku Kafu, and Kafu Supplementary, drawn by Sakurai Sessen and compiled by Ichihashi Chosho, which contain 252 illustrations. Oi Jisaburo's Nihon Zakura Shu (Collection of Japanese Cherry Trees) and Ota Yoai's illustrations (1973) contains 154 illustrations. …
