〘名〙① (「ちんじゅぶ」とも) 奈良・平安時代、陸奥国で蝦夷地経営に当たった軍政機関。養老六年(七二二)頃には鎮・鎮所などと称されたが天平年間(七二九‐七四九)頃に改称。当初多賀城に設けられ、のち胆沢城(岩手県水沢市辺)・平泉などに移り、鎌倉幕府開設に及んで廃止、建武中興の際一時復活した。鎮守。※三代格‐五・弘仁三年(812)四月二日「定二鎮守府官員一事 将軍一員 軍監一員 軍曹二員 医師弩師各一員」② 「ちんじゅふしょうぐん(鎮守府将軍)」の略。※建武年間記(南北朝頃)「請レ被レ加二大将軍号一状〈略〉爰顕家官昇二八座一。位至二二品一。依二別勅一莅二当州一。剰以二勲功賞一兼二鎮守府一」③ 旧日本海軍で、各海軍区の警備や所属部隊の監督などを担当した機関。明治九年(一八七六)横浜・長崎に置かれた東海・西海両鎮守府に始まり、昭和二〇年(一九四五)の敗戦時には横須賀・呉・佐世保・舞鶴の四鎮守府があった。※東京日日新聞‐明治二一年(1888)一月五日「佐世保鎮守府建築起工式を行ひ」
