Cape Toi

Japanese: 都井岬 - といみさき
Cape Toi

The southernmost cape in Miyazaki Prefecture. It belongs to Kushima City. It is a peninsula about 2 km wide and 4 km long, dividing Hyuga-Nada Sea and Shibushi Bay. It is a hilly mountainous area with a highest point of 295.3 meters and cliffs along the coastline. Evergreen broad-leaved forests are lush, and the 3,000 native cycad trees are particularly impressive and have been designated a special natural monument. The entire cape is also covered with grasslands, and is the habitat of the semi-wild Misaki horses (Misaki horses). There are more than 100 of them, and they originated from the Takanabe Domain's ranch. They are said to be a cross between a Japanese horse and a Korean horse, and are a nationally designated natural monument. The Toi Misaki Maki Association is in charge of their protection and management. Japanese macaques also live here. The offshore Ogose is a fishing spot for flying fish. It belongs to the Nichinan Coast National Park and is a 45-minute community bus ride from Kushima Station on the JR Nichinan Line.
