Fire enema cloth

It is a non-flammable cloth woven from asbestos thread. If dirt such as soot and grime is thrown into a fire and burned, the cloth will not burn but only the dirt will come off, hence the name, which means "enveloped by fire." It is also called asbestos cloth and is a type of asbestos. It has excellent heat and fire resistance, and was used for high-heat work and to keep boilers warm. Aoki Konyo points out that this manufacturing method has been known in China for a long time. It is said to have been the first in Japan to make it in 1764 (Meiwa 1) when Hiraga Gennai, together with Nakagawa Junan and others, used asbestos from Mount Chichibu.

石綿糸(せきめんし)で織った不燃性の布のこと。煤(すす)や垢(あか)などの汚れも火の中に投入して焼けば、布は燃えず汚れだけが落ちるところから、火で浣(すす)ぐという意味でこの名がある。石綿布ともいいアスベストの一種。耐熱、耐火性に優れており、高熱作業や汽缶などの保温用に使われた。中国では古くからこの製法が知られていることを青木昆陽(こんよう)が指摘している。日本では1764年（明和1）に平賀源内が中川淳庵(じゅんあん)らとともに秩父(ちちぶ)山の石綿(いしわた)を用いて製作したのが最初とされる。
