Bambusicola thoracica (English name: Bambusicola thoracica)
A bird of the genus Phasianidae (illustration). Total length about 27 cm. A hunting bird. Native to southern China and Taiwan. It was imported to Japan as a pet bird and released in Tokyo and Yokohama in 1919, after which wild specimens spread to various places. It now lives as a resident bird in areas with little snowfall south of Honshu. The Taiwanese one is a separate subspecies, known as the bamboo chicken. It was also released near Kobe City in 1931, and still lives in the area today. It is about the size of a pigeon, with a rounded body and a short tail.
